Hinterland White Cap

What better way to celebrate any occasion than with a bottle of Bubbly Hinterland Winery is the leading sparkling wine producer in Prince Edward County specializing in both Traditional Method and Charmat style sparking wines.  This blog was written in 2014 and the wine seems better every year I try it.WHITECAP2013small_medium (1)

The wine: White Cap Method Charmat 2013  $22
Made from Vidal and Riesling grapes seasoned with 7% Muscat, the wine underwent secondary fermentation in a pressurized tank to trap the bubbles within the wine. Charmat sparklings often refered to as ‘prosecco’ or ‘asti’ style wines and are younger and have a fruitier flavour than traditional method sparklings.

Hinterland  specializes in sparkling wines. It opened in 2010 in a renovated dairy barn on the Closson Road in Prince Edward County, Ontario.

The winemaker/owner: Jonas Newman

Jonas at Hinterland 2Newman was apprenticed at 13th Street Winery  for 4 years before moving with his wife and business partner Vicki Samaras to Prince Edward County.

Reviews:
Most of the major reviewers have visited Hinterland winery and commented favourably on their wines including David Lawrason, John Szabo, Beppi Crosariol, Konrad Ejbich and others. Hinterland was one of three Ontario wineries chosen to pour their sparking wines at Rediscover Canadian Wines in London England in May 2013.

Why I chose this wine:
I discovered Hinterland Winery a year ago. The wind and the snowplow had knocked down their sign so we drove past it at least five times before finding it. Jonas gave us a complete tour including a fascinating demonstration of how to disgorge the sediment from a traditional method sparkling and then let us have a tasting of the wine. He also explained about Charmat production and when we tasted the White Cap with its fresh sparkling floral and aromatic notes it had to come home with us.
Jonas Newman  has been very generous with his advice to other County winemakers and now Rosehall Run, Casa-Dea Estates and Lighthall Vineyard are all developing sparkling wines.
